It’s been a few days since the latest bomb in the Jon Jones saga has been dropped. When I received the notification from TMZ on my phone that Jones had test positive for a steroid my eyes widened and I said you’ve got to be fucking kidding me. This shit cannot be real. But real it was. This week was supposed to belong to Conor McGregor but it slightly got overshadowed by this huge news. Jon Jones, who apparently is the most gifted fighter on the UFC roster, has fucked up once again. There were so many different thoughts going through my head. How could he be so dumb? If he knowingly did take a steroid, what does this mean for his career? How badly is this going to affect the UFC? How is Daniel Cormier taking the news?
This latest installment in the Jon Jones saga is very confusing. As more information got out the less sense it all made. There’s confusion about the steroid he tested positive for, anabolic steroid Turinabol. From what I’m hearing in interviews it doesn’t even make sense for Jones to take this. Jones had been tested 7 times leading up to this fight and tested negative up until this. I may have misheard but I think his manager said that there was a 3 week window between the last sample test taken during training camp and the sample taken during the weigh ins. It doesn’t make sense to pass all the random tests during training camp but fail the one taken at the weigh ins. The sample taken at the weigh ins is the test that all the fighters know will be happening for sure. According to Jones manager, the entire team that helps Jon Jones was on top of everything to make sure something like this wouldn’t happen. He says it must have been a tainted supplement and that the B sample will be getting tested to confirm the results.
So what exactly is Turinabol? It is an oral steroid created in the 1960’s in East Germany. According to its history, this steroid was used widely among German athletes and helped them dominate between the 1960’s and 1980’s. It was used for its amazing benefits and had very little side effects. It gave the athlete tighter muscles, increase in strength, greater lean muscle mass, greater level of free testosterone and the ability to strongly bind to SHBG (Sex hormone-binding globulin). Basically the free testosterone, which wouldn’t have been used, can bind to SHBG and the athlete has more testosterone to support their body. This steroid allows the athlete to achieve results without weight gain which works for athletes in combat sports. Turinabol isn’t used for bulking up. It takes a few weeks for this steroid to kick in and see results. According to my research it takes 3 to 4 weeks, which sounds really suspicious in this case with Jon Jones. Another interesting fact about this steroid is that it doesn’t sound to be all the popular. Usually this steroid is taken along with other steroids. It doesn’t appear to be a go to steroid for most athletes. Also, it’s sold on the black market. At this time it is not produced by any pharmaceutical company.
Those who train with or work for Jon Jones have already come out in his defense. Jones wouldn’t do something like this with so much on the line. But who really knows. It makes me wonder not only as a fan but as someone who is interested in the intricacies of human behavior, what is happening with Jon Jones? What if he knowingly took this steroid? There are people in this world that no matter how many positive things are thrown their way they still somehow manage to mess things up. What if he didn’t know? The question then becomes who messed this up for him? Turinabol doesn’t seem to be a massively produced or popular steroid, so where the hell did it come from? Was it in a supplement he was taking? Did someone slip the oral steroid into his drink? If someone did mess this up for Jon well then he needs to take an even closer look at the people that surround him. It might be the people you least expect.
If the B Sample test comes back positive, what does this mean for Jon Jones and the UFC? Jon Jones return to the UFC was crucial. The sport only has a few stars that have crossed over to the mainstream. Ronda Rousey, Conor McGregor, and Jon Jones are the only ones. They brought in the casual fans and made them interested in buying the Pay Per View fights. Ronda Rousey is still dealing with her losses and most likely retiring. Conor McGregor is fighting Floyd Mayweather and has people wondering if he will return to MMA. He claims he will but who really knows. That leaves Jon Jones. He is a complex human being that has captivated the fans of MMA. He’s wild in and out of the octagon. But his wild side comes at a cost.
This is situation is disastrous for Jon Jones. Not only are the fans sick of his antics but it brings up the question of his talent. Did he fight clean? If this B Sample test comes up positive it will be hard to believe he was clean in the past. There were so many positive things being thrown Jones’ way. As a huge fan of this sport I looked forward to future match ups. There are interesting match ups in the light heavyweight division. Then there’s the potential match up with Brock Lesnar. The excitement that Jon Jones brought back to the fans is unfortunately being quickly diminished.
